Bringing Loss Transformer to market:

Who is Boor Actuarial, and what do they do?

Boor Actuarial was founded by Dr. Boor, an actuary with 45 years of experience. In his many years, Dr. Boor has found a fairly consistent problem in actuarial mathematics and felt the tools he had developed for his own practice could bring value to other actuarial groups.

Business development and onboarding.

Early on, it became clear that the client had a solution but didn't know what was next. We addressed this uncertainty with a handful of exercises that were critical for my onboarding as well coming to an alignment on what is next for the company.

Defining my role.

After talking in-depth with the client about his goals, I concluded that I could help him with three key aspects of the project.

Navigate a pathway to market.

Designing a website and brand

UX/UI research and Development

Service Value Proposition:

Loss Transformer is a B2B S.A.S. solution for developing rates with low data.

When developing rates with low data, actuaries have to compensate by having a very high deductible. In order to combat this, Boor Actuarial has created their own micro enhanced spreadsheet that can deliver a more accurate rate than other models.

Path To Market

Design website and brand

Opportunity:
Actuary design language is often dated. Risk:
Radical change might not resonate with the intended audience.

Launch the beta and begin promo

Opportunity:
Client already has a network to leverage.
Risk:
We risk staying in his bubble and missing potential clients.

Get feedback from testers

Opportunity:
Learn more about how they are using the software.
Risk:
People may be unable to share feedback due to nature of work.

New UI/UX based on feedback

Opportunity:
The beta Interface focuses squarely on utility.
Risk:Opens scope of project, and will need institutional support.

Release finalized product

Opportunity:
Potential to revolutionize actuarial industry.
Risk:
Users might not incorporate it into their workflow.

After I learned more about how the industry functions, we created a project plan for bringing Loss Transformer to market. We identified two pivotal points for a successful product (outlined above). First, we will have a beta launch for user feedback. Later, we will hard launch once more clients are secured.

Our goal

The sites main goal is building interest in Loss Transformer, and driving connections with Boor Actuarial to test the product

Understanding the industry

I started by looking at other actuarial brands and understanding industry trends. After finding a few sites I liked, I developed supporting materials like business cards and convention matterials for the client in order to align on a cohesive design language.

Developing a brand

I ended up deciding on using photos of buildings in financial hubs like New York to convey the feelings of longevity and stability. I also chose a font and color pallet that was direct and less likely to alienate potential clients.

Important considerations

Scalability is very important, as many people will open it on their phones at conferences. User testing demonstrated an effective mobile experience when users were tasked with quickly finding information on the site.

In order to drive downloads, there are four ways to reach the Loss Transformer product page. Users are effectively directed to learn about the product and reach out to Dr. Boor for a free Beta trial.

Application Design

I cannot share what our software solution looks like, but I will be able to share more about user testing methodology when we overhaul the UX. We are currently getting more testers for the beta software and securing client funding.
